An 11 year old Acton girl recently won the 2009 Grand Overall Child Actor Award at the Canadian Model & Talent Convention in Toronto.

Carly L., a Grade 6 student, took the honour at the convention held at the Hilton Toronto Airport Hotel April 30 to May 3, 2009. Carly competed against more than 50 Contestants in her age group from across Canada for acting and modelling.

Carly also won first place for monologue, first for TV commercial and was the second runner up for singing. Judges were from Toronto, Los Angeles and New York. “Great job Carly! You really stood out in the competition,” said one judge at the convention.

Another agent said Carly “has great potential and you can tell she has an inner drive and passion for acting.”

Carly is represented by Carolyn’s Model & Talent Agency in Mississauga and after she received the awards, she was called back by seven international agents who interested in representing her in other markets like Los Angeles and New York.

Her mother Yvonne said they are considering signing with an agent in New York.

Carly is very happy with her success at the convention. She said she was nervous at times but drew on tips she learned at the seminars at the convention on how to turn nervous energy into positive energy.

“Acting is my dream, so is singing. I love them both,” said Carly.

She said she has loved acting for a “long, long time” but really discovered her desire to act when she was in Grade 5 and she and a friend attended a movie and model camp.

“When I was in Grade 2, I was afraid to speak. I would only talk in whispers,” said Carly, adding that now she sings in front of all kinds of people.

Carly began acting in February 2008 with a short film where she had the lead role playing a little girl dying of leukemia. She was in two music videos in May, in August, she was in an in-store video for a major retailer, in September, she was in a film documentary showing solar laptops that will be airing this September and Carly also appeared on Breakfast Television modelling winter wear for Walmart.

Carly hopes to be an actor and singer when she grows up and also to go to university.
