Emma came home from a Toronto modelling convention this weekend with four trophies – among them one for overall child model of the year. The Grade 5 pupil at St. Catherine School also made contacts with modelling scouts from as far away as Tokyo during the Canadian Model and Talent Convention.

She said the scout from Tokyo was going to keep in contact with Mode Elle – the Belleville agency Emma works with.  “She wanted me to meet with her in about six months,” said Emma, the daughter of Sarah and Jeff.

To advance to the four-day convention, Emma auditioned at Mode Elle in Belleville last fall. Aspiring models and actors from across Canada attended the 15th annual convention, where Emma competed in four categories.

She had to walk the runway, submit a cover shot and two of her best pictures and perform a commercial she made up for the judges.

Emma won first place for runway, first place for cover and was first in her division – ages eight to 11. That was on top of the overall child model award.

“I didn’t really think I was going to win the cover,” she said.

Emma is no stranger to performing. She has been in commercials for products such as Tide, Care Bears and toy trucks since she was eight years old. Sarah said Emma has worked with an acting agent in Toronto since she started doing commercials.

"She just recently has taken an interest in modelling,” Sarah said, adding that is why she got involved with Mode Elle. “I really like posing for the camera,” Emma said.

About 400 people participate in the Canadian Model and Talent Convention, and Sarah said, on the fourth day some get “callbacks” from scouts and agents. Emma got 10 call-backs.

Modelling isn’t her only aspiration; she wants to be a paediatrician.
